2. Single vs Multiple Entry: Key Differences

A Single Entry visa allows one entry into Japan within the visa validity period. Once you leave Japan, the visa is exhausted — even if days of the granted stay remain. Multiple Entry visas (5-year) allow unlimited entries, subject to the 90-days-per-visit rule and no more than 180 cumulative days in any 12-month rolling period.

Multiple Entry visas are granted primarily based on the purpose of visit history, frequency of prior visits to Japan, and the applicant's professional background. First-time applicants are almost always issued a Single Entry visa regardless of eligibility — a subsequent application after a clean first visit history typically yields the 3-year or 5-year multiple entry.

3. Photo Specifications

Japan's MOFA enforces the strictest photo standards of any country's e-Visa system. The digital photo must be: JPEG format, minimum 600×800 pixels, maximum 6MB file size, plain white background (no off-white, cream, or light gray), face occupying 70–80% of the frame, no glasses (since 2022), and taken within 6 months.

Applications are automatically rejected by the AI scanning system if the background is not a true neutral white (#FFFFFF equivalent) or if face coverage falls outside the 70–80% range. Unlike paper embassy submissions, there is no human review of rejected photos — you must resubmit.

4. Submission & Approval Timeline

Applications are submitted through the official Japan e-Visa portal (evisa.mofa.go.jp). Processing time is officially 5 business days, but 80% of approved applications receive their decision within 2–3 business days. Apply at least 4 weeks before your intended departure to allow for correction requests.

Upon approval, you receive a PDF Certificate of Eligibility (COE) via email. Print this document — airlines and immigration officers require a physical copy at boarding and at port of entry. Japanese immigration does not accept digital display of the COE on a phone screen.
